Does your school or district’s Multi-Tiered System of Supports for Reading (MTSS-R) need a tune-up? Ensuring all students become proficient readers is one of the most fundamental responsibilities for K–12 educators. A strong, comprehensive MTSS-R provides a structured yet flexible framework to identify reading issues early and provide customized tiers of intervention and support.

Implementing an MTSS-R effectively can pose a significant challenge. Creating a cohesive system with properly aligned assessments, evidence-based instructional methods, intervention protocols, and data-driven decision making processes demand considerable expertise.

A new resource from REL Northwest

A new MTSS-R facilitator’s guide from Regional Educational Lab Northwest (REL Northwest), which is operated by WestEd in partnership with Marzano Research, supports district and school teams that want to review and improve their literacy systems. Developed as a component of their partnership with Montana’s Office of Public Instruction and Laurel Public Schools, it’s offered as an open resource for all. It includes a six-part professional learning process packed with interactive activities, planning protocols, and implementation tools conveniently bundled into one package.

There are three main professional learning sessions that walk teams step-by-step through assessing current MTSS-R practices, creating action plans for improvement, and evaluating broader systemic needs for reading interventions. User-friendly presentation slides, handouts, worksheets, and planning templates are all included, making it simple for literacy coaches or team leads to facilitate the process.

When reflecting on their experience using the resources, Hardin Public School’s Curriculum Director Devon Flamm said, “The resources can be used across many situations! By using them with the team, I felt empowered to implement them throughout other curriculum meetings. The district adopted a new K–5 Math curriculum, and I was able to use multiple of the resources with the group to help keep them motivated and moving forward.”

In the coming weeks, we will highlight work with districts like Hardin Public Schools and Whitehall School District in Montana, where REL Northwest’s data-driven professional learning on MTSS-R implementation, supported by WestEd and Marzano Research, has catalyzed powerful improvement initiatives. Keep an eye out for those blogs!
