The world of education is constantly evolving, with new challenges and opportunities emerging daily.

To navigate this ever-changing landscape, teachers need more than just classroom experience—they need to become researchers in their own right.

The Teacher as Researcher Fellowship is a transformative initiative that accomplishes just this. It is a powerful process Marzano Research designed to support educators as catalysts of change within their classrooms and beyond.

What is Teacher as Researcher?

The Teacher as Researcher Fellowship is a professional learning and leadership program that equips teachers with the skills and knowledge to conduct action research within their classrooms.

It’s a journey of discovery that helps educators understand and implement Instructional Improvement Cycles, conduct real-world experiments, and disseminate their findings about effective teaching practices.

The Secret behind Teacher as Researcher’s Effectiveness: Three Key Elements

Research Design Workshops: Fellows participate in collaborative workshops where they learn how to design and execute Instructional Improvement Cycles using quasi-experimental research designs The Instructional Improvement Cycles allow teachers to evaluate the effectiveness of an instructional strategy, contributing to their own professional growth and to a body of knowledge about what works in education. Fellows get to workshop their plans with colleagues and Marzano Research coaches, receiving individualized coaching and support.

A Professional Learning Network: Fellows become part of an international network of educators who share their research findings and insights gained from their Instructional Improvement Cycles. This network not only provides a space for educators to learn from their peers, but also contributes to a collective body of knowledge that enhances student outcomes.

Leadership Development: Fellows get the opportunity to showcase their work at an annual symposium, publish findings, and become coaches to new participants. This leadership development aspect enables educators to improve their practice as well as guide others on their educational journey.

The Journey of a Teacher Researcher

Being a Teacher as Researcher fellow involves a year-long commitment.

Fellows participate in six Research Design Workshops, where they learn the intricacies of designing, implementing, and interpreting the results of the experiments conducted during their Instructional Improvement Cycles.

Then, throughout the year, they implement at least three cycles. They attend regular meetings with their coach and Fellowship colleagues to refine their plans, make sense of their findings, and reflect on their teaching practices. Fellows also earn valuable Continuing Education Units (CEUs).

Who benefits from becoming a fellow?

The Teacher as Researcher Fellowship is open to all educators, especially mid-career teachers seeking professional growth.

It is particularly beneficial for those who possess a solid foundation in pedagogy and classroom management but are seeking intellectual challenges and leadership opportunities.
