June is Pride Month, an opportunity to celebrate and honor the history and achievements of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) community. As an education organization with a commitment to equity, we believe in the importance of safe, positive learning environments where every student is welcomed, valued, and respected. We also believe students should have the opportunity to see themselves reflected in the curriculum.
To support your efforts to engage students during LGBTQ+ Pride Month and throughout the year, we’ve assembled a set of resources for students and educators. These resources can help increase understanding about the history and current issues surrounding LGBTQ+ equality as well as facilitate discussions about gender identity and sexual orientation:
- Share My Lesson has an extensive collection of activities and learning tools for LGBTQ+ Pride Month, organized by grade level. A lesson plan on gender stereotyping, a blog post on gender bias in the classroom, and a video covering the history of the rainbow flag are among the featured resources.
- This EdSource article on supporting LGBTQ+ students includes links to the Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s Welcoming Schools Initiative, the GSA Network’s guide for starting a LGBTQ+ student support group, and downloadable lesson plans from the Anti-Defamation League.
- WeTeachNYC has assembled a collection of lesson plans designed to help educators foster gender-positive learning environments. The collection of learning materials includes content for all grade levels and is relevant to teachers, students, administrators, and caregivers alike.
