Jim Wright
Researcher

Hi! My name is Jim, and I am a researcher at Marzano Research. My background is originally in speech-language pathology, and I have experience working clinically in both educational and medical settings before transitioning to a career in research. I obtained my Bachelor of Science and Master of Arts in speech-language pathology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and I completed my Ph.D. in speech-language pathology with a specialization in educational data science at the University of Oregon. I am fluent in the statistical programming language R, and I like to use this program to create data visualizations and dashboards. I am additionally certified as a What Works Clearinghouse reviewer of both group design and single case research design studies. My primary research interest is the development of empirically driven guidelines for returning students to the classroom after sustaining a concussion and providing educators with resources to best support these students during recovery.

I am originally from Chicago, IL, and currently reside in Eugene, OR with my wife and two kids. My wife and I moved to Eugene for my return to school in 2017 before our kids were born, so we are enjoying the opportunity to raise native Oregonians. Although the rain can be relenting at times in the winter and spring, we love Eugene and all of Oregon for its lushness, scenery, and abundance of recreational activities.

You can often find me (pre-kids):

  • Hiking in the Deschutes national forest and Three Sisters Wilderness
  • Brewery hopping and site seeing along the Oregon coast
  • Swimming at the beautiful pools of the Eugene Park District

You can often find me (post-kids)

  • Watching Bluey on Disney+
  • Reading Sandra Boynton books
  • Refereeing tummy time

What I could talk about for hours:

  • The relationship between glucose metabolism and blood flow following concussion
  • Chicago White Sox baseball
  • Oregon Ducks football
  • Plot design themes to use with ggplot2 in R
