New Regional Educational Laboratory (REL) – Central at MRL

January 2012—We're proud to announce the creation of a new Regional Educational Laboratory (REL) at Marzano Research Laboratory to focus on key K–12 policies. This new partnership will bring new educational research and innovation to seven states in the Midwest/Mountain region.

Marzano Research Laboratory (MRL), RMC Research Corporation, and Augenblick, Palaich and Associates, Inc. have received a contract from the US Department of Education to form the Regional Educational Laboratory – Central at MRL. Dr. Robert J. Marzano, CEO of MRL, will lead the organization as executive director.

“I've always been passionate about the cycle of turning research into action. In partnership with the seven states we'll serve, the regional laboratory will be able to facilitate new scientific research that will examine the impact of innovations in education policy and practice. Then, we'll share these findings across our region to improve educator and student performance—and help educators serve as models for their peers nationwide,” said Dr. Marzano.

Regional Educational Laboratory – Central will focus on building alliances with state- and district-level education leaders in Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wyoming to explore key policies surrounding educator effectiveness, closing the achievement gap, and postsecondary education and workforce readiness.

The US Department of Education Institute of Education Sciences (IES) supports 10 Regional Education Laboratories (RELs) across the country. These RELs are charged with supporting applied research and development, disseminating school improvement practices widely, and providing technical assistance to education agencies in their regions.
